Papp Laszlo Sportarena played host to a different kind of handball match on Saturday, when the media professionals of the tournament stepped onto the court in a friendly atmosphere to enjoy the game they have been covering throughout the EHF EURO 2014.

The media match is becoming a tradition after being introduced in Denmark at the Men's EHF EURO 2014, where it starred players such as Lars Christensen who was a specialist commentator for Danish TV2 at the tournament.

"We wanted to give the media a chance to get on the court and actually play handball rather than just sitting in the stands and watching," said EHF Head of Media and Communicatons JJ Rowland.

The match is a light-hearted one, with a full pre-game ceremony that includes the event flag, referees and official mascots, the Foxettes, and individual introductions for the players.

All kinds of media representatives take part in the game, and are divided into teams on the spot. On Saturday the title belonged to the orange team, with a final score after 30 minutes of play at 9:8.

Tamas Szabo was the commentator for the match, making plenty of jokes and poking fun at those he knows best.

"It was really interesting to see the media guys playing handball. I think they should stay in the media and not play handball, but for fun it was nice, for sport it was nice," was Szabo's expert opinion on the game.

Szabo's commentary helped set the enjoyable tone for the game, which also featured tense music such as the themes from Jaws and Psycho, and referees dancing with the Foxettes during time-outs.

"It's much easier to talk about handball than to play it," said Hungary media manager Andras Agai Kis, summarising what many of the participants were probably thinking.
